Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
Out of the passionate love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the true gospel of grace, and his brothers and sisters, Paul got in Peter’s face for bowing to those who were mixing the law and grace.
Hmmm. That doesn’t sound like a loving Christ follower according to the standards of some today. I beg to differ. Like Paul, our passionate love for God, the truth of His Word, and the love of our brothers and sisters should compel us to defend His truth no matter how much it may offend.
Paul didn’t want them to re-enter into even one letter of the law and the bondage it brings. A law no one could ever keep. The fire of God’s love for them in him corrected them and implored them to rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ and to stop preaching two gospels.
Jesus fulfilled every letter of the law, and it is an affront to all He did for us to mix even a letter of the law into justification by faith alone in Christ and His death and resurrection for the forever atonement of our sins.
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed,” Galatians 1:6-10.
No mealy-mouthed, marshmallow foo-foo talk here by Paul. I see much of the church talking around the truth, which is technically a lie, because they are unwilling, and quite frankly don’t love God and people enough to speak His truth and defend it.
He tells them they are perverting the gospel and anyone who preaches anything but the one true gospel should be accursed.
Some ways churches pervert the gospel today by continuing to mix the law and grace (or new man-made laws they’ve concocted) to continue to keep His people in bondage and oppression.
Continue to preach the tithe is required and say things like, “That’s why your financed are cursed because you don’t give the full 10% of your gross income.” Speaking of gross, this is a blatant manipulation of God’s Word, a perversion of the gospel, a mixing of law and grace to ensure they collect the money to pay their salaries and bills. The tithe was part of the law which Jesus fulfilled. We are now called to be cheerful givers. This should be confronted by the people in any church this is being taught just as Paul did.
Teach that one can “lose our salvation.” This is one of the most hideous attacks on the blood of Jesus. I’ve seen comments from unbelievers who’ve said, “Why should I choose Jesus because if I mess up, I’ll go to hell anyway?” People take perversions of the gospel too lightly and few are confronting them as Paul did. Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” Period. Amen.
One truly born again cannot become unborn again. They are perfected forever by one offering. The blood of Jesus is enough. It is finished. Those in Christ have had every letter of the law fulfilled for them by Jesus by faith alone. Once in Christ, God Himself immediately seals us for all eternity and is sanctifying us from glory to glory.
“God puts sickness on His children to teach them a lesson.” Hogwash! I spit on those words and lies against my Lord Jesus Christ. Okay, I just heard myself say that in a Russian accent. This lie too is the mixing of law and grace. Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law. Period. One of the curses of disobeying the law was sickness, and if Jesus redeemed us from all the curses if the law this includes sickness. Because of Jesus, if we get sick, we can pray believing to be healed because since He fulfilled the law, the blessings of Abraham were also made available to us.
Churches who teach God puts sickness on us to teach us a lesson, though we are under grace, are teaching that Christ didn’t really fulfill the law. They are suffering from “the gospel of grace is just to good to be true” syndrome and feel compelled, under the influence of a demonic, religious spirit, to put the law back on people and teach this lie against God. 1 Peter 2:24 says, Jesus “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” Our Lord Jesus atoned for our sins, to deliver us from the entire law, and so we could be healed in every way, including from sickness.
Regarding sickness and disease, this makes me wonder (not conclude) about when Paul says in Galatians 1:9, “Now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed,” that the reason why many believers get sick and stay sick is because they’ve accursed themselves by preaching another gospel (with the law) that teaches God makes His children sick to teach them a lesson for His glory (which is found nowhere in the gospels and is totally opposite of Him fully delivering us from the curse of the law).
Notice I said, “accursed themselves.” By choosing to preach a false gospel by their own free will, could they be accursing themselves by doing so? I will be seeking the Lord more in His Word and in prayer about this revelation that just came to me as I was writing this.
Categorizing sins as greater than the blood of Jesus or calling things sin that are not. E.g. blaming those divorced as, “You get what you deserve,” or “Sorry, you can no longer minister here.”
Does God hate divorce? Yes, because it’s a form of death and greatly hurts all involved. It’s a terrible and tragic thing. But His Word makes provision for it as well as remarriage as long as it’s a legal divorce* and not merely a separation. With a legal certificate of divorce, remarriage is not sin. I must add that we should try everything possible to avoid divorce. But sometimes, it’s not possible, not wise, or even safe to stay married because of adultery and/or abuse.
Sadly, religious men continue to add to the Word and act as the law, taking it upon themselves to elevate divorce and insist people still be punished, condemned, shunned, and excluded, etc. by them. Punishing them for even what God is not. Jesus paid it all.
Those in Christ have all their sins forgiven – past, present, and future (Hebrews 10:14). That’s grace. Unfortunately, there are many other ways today’s churches mix the law and grace or come up with laws they’ve created to add to or take away from the one true gospel.
“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter,” Romans 7:6
The words of this post are also a call to pray, to fervently cry out for the church and its shepherds, and for ‘Pauls’ to rise up and defend His Word out of love of God and people, for His namesake and for the sake of the lost who are watching and are being driven or kept away by perverted gospels.
Father, burn away every false gospel upon the face of the earth and draw every church, every shepherd, every child of Yours back unto Your one true gospel of grace – the finished work of Jesus Christ on behalf of all who’ve confessed Your Son’s name in Jesus’ name, amen.
*Transparency. I edited the categorizing sins, etc section because I knew the section category and example I wanted to use but went back because I felt I needed to reword the explanation better.
